1.Залив, в котором на острове Оаху [ Oahu] в 12 км к северо-западу от Гонолулу расположена крупнейшая база ВМС США [ Navy, U.S.] на Тихом океане. База [Pearl Harbor Naval Base], созданная в 1900, была оснащена современным судоходным каналом (1908) и сухим доком (1919). В конце 1941 на базе, носившей прозвище "Гибралтар Тихого океана", находились 75 боевых кораблей. 7 декабря 1941 в 7 час. 50 мин. база подверглась внезапному нападению японской авиации, уничтожившей в течение 2 часов большую часть флота США (18 крупных судов, более 200 самолетов). Американцы потеряли 3,4 тыс. человек убитыми и пропавшими без вести, 1,3 тыс. человек ранеными. Это событие послужило толчком для вступления США во вторую мировую войны и стало началом войны на Тихом океане. Президент Ф. Д. Рузвельт [ Roosevelt, Franklin Delano (FDR)] назвал 7 декабря "днем несмываемого позора" [ date that will live in infamy], позднее появился лозунг: "Помни Перл-Харбор!" ["Remember Pearl Harbor"].
